Why Every Mother Needs A Capsule Wardrobe

I am a mother and I refuse to look like a hot mess (most of the time).

OK, I admit it, I don’t give as much effort as I should when it comes to looking my best. But that has to change because feeling my best starts with looking my best. At least for me. Yes, mental health matters a lot, but if we are being completely honest, what we look like, definitely affects how we feel.

I can’t blame it all on motherhood. I stopped trying long before that. But it is in motherhood that I have noticed the effects of this behavior. Simply put, if I don’t put in the effort in the mornings to do all of the things that make me look good to feel good, my motherly performance is not at one hundred.

What makes a mother feel good, differs from woman to woman. For me, looking good means dressing in clothes that make me feel classy and beautiful. And although clothes are just a piece of the puzzle, it is most definitely a big piece. So when I was introduced to capsule wardrobes I found a way to make this big piece of the puzzle, small.

What Is A Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is your closet. A condensed version of your closet that only has the clothes that make you feel good. If you do a quick search in Google, you’ll find a lot of different definitions because everyone has their own take on what a capsule wardrobe is, but the idea behind it is the same for everyone.

Capsule wardrobes can be very minimalist or they can be very generous. It depends on the individual’s lifestyle.

For mothers, a capsule wardrobe is a saving grace. It is a way to have hundreds of outfit combinations in just one load of laundry. You are welcome, Mama.

I know some of you may be thinking that if the number of items in your capsule can be washed in just one load of laundry, does that mean that you will have to do laundry all of the time? Well, again, that depends on your lifestyle and how big your capsule is. Also, most of us already do laundry everyday soooooo.

How To Build A Capsule Wardrobe

I am no expert and I am most definitely no minimalist, but I am constantly trying to simplify my life. So after learning about capsule wardrobes, I decided to build my own.

The very first thing I did was life-changing. I decluttered my closet. I donated my gently used clothes. You know the ones. The ones we buy because they are in style or because they look great on a mannequin and then we wear it once and feel uncomfortable and insecure, but we decide to keep it in our closet because someday it will fit perfectly and we will shine. No. Get rid of it. If you don’t feel like the very best version of yourself in a certain shirt or dress, let it go. Make room for items that will make you feel amazing.

After getting rid of ninety percent of my clothes, I made a list of the types of items that are most practical for my lifestyle.

What do I do most days? When I work, I wear my work uniform. So I have no need for office attire. When I am off from work, I take care of my son. We spend most of our days at home; playing, cooking, cleaning, and cuddling on the couch. We also try to go to the pool, park, and playground as much as possible. On weekends, hubby and I like to do groceries, run errands, have lunch dates, and visit family.

As you can see, my life is pretty informal. So when I built my capsule, I focused on comfortable everyday pieces. I also thought about the weather where we live. Cue eye roll. South Florida is the place. Think humid, hot, and horrible. Oh, rain too.

After writing out what I want, I go to my favorite retail app (hello, Nordstrom) and look for pieces I love. I take price into consideration, but when it comes to a capsule wardrobe, quality trumps quantity so I am willing to spend a little more. I don’t go buying everything at once. I budget myself and shop responsibly. I am actually still working on acquiring these pieces, but soon my capsule wardrobe will be complete.

Why Every Mother Needs A Capsule Wardrobe

It’s fun, it’s easy, and it lasts. These are just the simple whys among so many other more complex ones, but I really do believe that every mother needs a capsule wardrobe. The definition you give to your capsule is your own and you build it, however, feels right for you, but having one guarantee that you always have something to wear that makes you feel your very best. It guarantees less laundry, less folding, and less having to go out shopping because you “have nothing to wear”.

Whether you build one large capsule or one small basic capsule and add seasonal capsules to it, is up to you. You do what works for you, but the outcome will be the same. A closet full of pieces that you absolutely love and feel great in.

If you want to build your very own capsule wardrobe, but are unsure of where to start, I created a Capsule Wardrobe For Beginners – The Mother’s Edition workbook. It has everything you need to curate your perfect, look good, and feel good capsule wardrobe.

I hope you enjoyed this post and I wish you the best in curating your perfect capsule wardrobe.

Love,
